The Sprawl of Technology

I had an interesting experience this week. See, I help people use technology to build and improve their businesses. One thing I teach specifically is how to keep tabs on your tech stack and keep things in check. Unfortunately, this isn’t a one time event. This week I decided to go through my own exercise with my business and audit my tech stack. I was shocked with the number of tools I was able to cancel or put on a “think about canceling before renewal” list.

Here is the thing. If we aren’t careful, we will collect technology. There are so many cool ideas that people come up with that will solve our problem. It is so easy to subscribe to an app here, download an app there, and usually the marketing is so good on these apps that we might not even realize we are being sucked in.

I recently heard the quote “The more you want something to be true, the more you will be likely to believe the story.” Now I don’t know who to attribute that to, but I totally think it is a true statement. We want to succeed in business and we want some tool to help us do that. Unfortunately, the tools themselves don’t make the business work. Yes, automation can improve things, tools can make things faster and easier, but only if you do the work to create good processes in the first place.
