Become OK with a lot of things going wrong

Running a business is no easy feat. It requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. As your business grows, you’ll realize that there will always be something that’s not working the way you wanted it to. It could be your marketing, sales, or even your support team. A customer could be unhappy, or something could be broken. As a business owner, you need to accept that a lot of things could go wrong. You need to recognize that as long as the general trajectory is positive, it’s okay if things aren’t going perfectly.

In his book, “The Psychology of Money,” author Morgan Housel talks about the stock market and how a stock can grow significantly over time yet still spend most of its time below the last previous high watermark. This means that a stock could peak at a particular price and then drop down to a lower price range. It could then rise up again and spike up even higher because of good news, only to drop back down again, but usually not back to where it was before. Over time, the overall trend becomes positive. If you’re always measuring the stock value against its peak, you’ll end up missing out and thinking that you’re losing all the time.

Similarly, if we measure ourselves against the best version of ourselves in everything across the board every day, we’ll always fall short. But as long as there is a positive trajectory in our business, like the systems slowly getting better, the number of leads increasing, and the value that we’re providing in the workspace increasing, it’s enough. This slow, continual growth is what matters, and the value of your business will compound over time. The trick is to become okay with things not going the way that you want them to all the time. Accept that there will be many things broken all around you, but slowly improve those things.

It’s not something that everyone is good at, and it takes time to learn how to be okay with things around us being broken and slowly fixing them. However, it’s essential to learn this skill. It’s easy to get bogged down by the things that aren’t working in our business, but we need to focus on the things that are. We need to acknowledge that there will always be something that needs fixing, but that’s okay. As long as we’re moving forward and making progress, we’re on the right track.
